The fall of Isfahan

Mahmud Hotak's Ghilzai Afghans, a few thousand strong, besieged Isfahan for six months in 1722. Famine inside the city forced surrender, and Sultan Husayn abdicated in person to the Afghan commander.

The state had no field army capable of relieving the capital — the end product of decades of military neglect and fiscal drift.
