The Qarakhanids
Converting to Islam in the tenth century, the Qarakhanids took Bukhara from the Samanids in 999 and governed Transoxiana and the Tarim basin as a confederation of family appanages.
Their coinage is correspondingly complex: multiple rulers, elaborate Turkic titles alongside Arabic, and a mint network spread from Samarqand to Kashgar.
Attribution challenges
Qarakhanid titulature is layered and shifting, with rulers changing titles as their status changed, so identification often depends on the title rather than the personal name.
Later issues become debased and irregular; early silver in good condition is the collectable end of a field that rewards specialist reference works.
