The last great war of antiquity

The Roman–Persian war of 602–628 exhausted both empires. Khosrow's armies reached the walls of Constantinople; Heraclius's counter-offensive reached Ctesiphon. Within a decade of the peace, Arab armies took both the Sasanian heartland and Rome's eastern provinces.

That war is legible in the coinage: mint output surges across dozens of workshops, regnal years run to 38, and the silver is struck fast and in vast quantity to pay armies.

Collecting Khosrow II

Because so much survives, this is where most collectors begin. A single reign offers dozens of mint signatures, giving an affordable way to build a geographic set covering the whole empire.

Look for full flans with complete marginal decoration and clear crown detail; the crescents-and-stars border and the winged crown are the reign's visual signature.
