Between the Timurids and the Safavids, western Iran was held by Turkmen confederations — the Qara Qoyunlu, 'Black Sheep', and then the Aq Qoyunlu, 'White Sheep'. Jahan Shah brought the Qara Qoyunlu to their greatest extent.

His Tabriz was a major cultural centre; the Blue Mosque built under his patronage is among the finest surviving fifteenth-century Iranian buildings.

Coinage

Qara Qoyunlu silver tankas and their fractions are struck across a mint network in Azerbaijan, Iraq and central Iran, generally with clear Arabic legends and dates.

Uzun Hasan's Aq Qoyunlu defeated and killed Jahan Shah in 1467, and Aq Qoyunlu coinage supersedes the series shortly afterwards.
