Collapse of the White Sheep

After Uzun Hasan's death in 1478 and Yaqub's in 1490, the Aq Qoyunlu fragmented into competing claimants. Baysunghur's brief reign belongs to that disintegration, which within a decade left western Iran open to the Safavid movement.

Shah Ismail's decisive victory at Sharur in 1501 ended Aq Qoyunlu power and began Safavid rule.

Coinage of a contested throne

Coins from the succession years are struck at multiple mints for rival claimants, sometimes in the same year — the clearest evidence available for who controlled which city and when.

Short reigns mean small output, so Baysunghur issues are scarce and mint-dated examples are valuable for reconstructing the political map.
